DIY Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets are considered harmful due to the chemicals they contain and their potential adverse effects on human health and the environment. Plus everyone's skin is so sensitive these days, including me! In my skincare journey I started doing a lot of research on what was best for my skin -fragrances are not something that worked, fragrances can also release harmful gases when heated in the dryer. These chemicals are linked to respiratory issues, including asthma and allergic reactions. Some dryer sheets even contain compounds like phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors and have been associated with hormonal imbalances which I also struggle with.

The biggest concern overall is the environmental impact of dryer sheets and the chemicals they release during use can contribute to air and water pollution which. Overall, while dryer sheets may seem harmless, their potential health and environmental risks highlight the importance of considering alternative, safer options for softening and freshening laundry. I've been making a big effort to be healthier and this recipe is what I used, plus it's so much cuter than a dryer box.

  • About 20 Re-purposed rags, towels- about 5"-7" squares

Steps

  1. Roll up rags and place them in the jar, you can do this as chaotically as you like as long as they all fit.
  2. In a bowl mix in 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/4 cup distilled water and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. I love lemongrass and sweet orange or anything with lavender or geranium.
  3. Pour the solution over your rags in the jar and close the lid. Shake it up a little and give the rags time to do their thing and turn into dryer sheets. The rags should be saturated but not messy dripping everywhere.
  4. When you switch a load of laundry toss one in the dryer.

The vinegar smell doesn't linger and helps your clothes absorb everything and it makes everything so much softer and static-free. Vinegar really is amazing!
